Maya Angelou
Hello and welcome - my name is Dyann, and I am glad you have stopped by.
I founded Grace & Grit Press as a way to share my thoughts through fictional stories. I consider myself an accidental writer because while I have always loved to read, I never thought about writing, not serious writing. The occasional poem or essay, maybe a self-help or motivational piece - yes, I write those a lot, but a book? A fictional book? No, it was not something I thought I could do. And then I had an idea for a story and every time I tried to push it down, it kept popping up again. Finally, to prove to myself that couldn't do it, I started; I was shocked when I finished.
I am excited to share with you that in the next few months my first fictional novel, Finding Sara will be published. As you look around the site, you will find more information on Grace & Grit Press - how I chose that name, why it matters to me, and what I hope my writing accomplishes. You will also find a teaser about the book and some behind the scenes info sharing some of what I was thinking about as I wrote it.
Please, look around, say hi, and I hope you will visit often.
Sara’s husband, Sam, died unexpectedly. As her grief feels increasingly overwhelming, she isn’t sure how to move forward, but long-time friends Angus and Maggie reach out with a job offer. They are grappling with their own difficult situation: Maggie has cancer, and they must temporarily move for her treatment. Angus is forced to leave behind the Faith Community Center he started a few years earlier. Would Sara undertake the role of pastoring the small congregation in his absence? Could she keep the center going? Knowing she needs a change and feeling this is her best option, she reluctantly accepts the challenge and moves to the small town of Duncanville. But starting over isn’t easy.
Sara faces the uncertain twists and turns of a new life. Meetings and events throughout the week. Worship service on Sundays. Angry visitors at church. Run-ins with the chief of police. Surprising friendships. The many unique quirks of a small southern town. As she gradually settles into her new routine, she discovers that despite the pain, she still has a purpose. Life is still beautiful, and she isn’t too old to tackle a new adventure.
